Apple - Their Choice of Colours (Part 1)

Apple devices are superior in terms of design to other computer and mobile phone companies. Ok, this is in my opinion, but I would go as far as to say every time competitors copy a feature or try and match something Apple do, Apple are always one step ahead. I have had a mac book for the last 14 years, my first was a glossy white mac book, which at the time stood out against the sea of grey and black plastic laptops. Other laptop companies bought out a white laptop yet some how these didn't work in the same way as the iconic white apple mac. Now Apple laptops aren't available in white, they are available in silver, rose gold and champagne gold in aluminium casing, not plastic like the majority of other laptops. They have continued to stand out from the crowd. From the bright early mac computers with coloured plastic shells to the slick wireless technologies they are currently normalising.

A device that has never been successfully imitated by a competitor is the Ipod, there have been MP3 players around before hand, yet nothing has had the same influence an Ipod. The first Ipods were white, then as they expanded the range creating the Ipod (biggest memory), the Ipod touch, the Ipod Nano, the Ipod Shuffle. Apple started to get more creative, a few generations in the Ipod became more colourful, these looked more fun and perhaps appeal to a younger demographic than the original black and white Ipods. The image below shows iPod Nanos in 7 fun colours and 2 more sophisticated light grey and charcoal- metallic, RED aids charity. The Ipods were cleverly marketed in the early 2000's with black silhouettes.

It took a few years before the Iphone had it's colour transformation or should I say they built the colour into the design. Then they launched the 5C in 2013 along side the more sophisticated 5S. The 5C was marketed as the funner younger phone in the bright colours. Personally I am not a fan of these colour choices, here they went for the glossy pastel colour palette instead of the metallic shades used for iPods. Personally I dislike all of the colouts with the exception of white. Yet some of the colours proved to be very popular. The pink iPhone was the best seller, followed by the blue, then green, then white, yellow last by a long way.

In addition to the coloured 5C Apple marketed an alternative contrast coloured phone case with holes in it to create a pattern of pastel colours.

The Apple watches are still in there infancy and have had a mixed success, I am not tempted, the battery life sounds pretty poor (needs to be charged every 2 days - no thanks). Yet again they are creating a further device for that can make a customer dependant on.

What is the future for Apple and how they use colour, this year will be the 10 year anniversary of iPhone, there have been rumours of wireless charging (how?), better camera?, better battery life? Is there only so much they can do or will an Iphone and an Ipad become one of the same thing? Are iPods looking dated and becoming pointless already? Some say so, they were the hot gadget of the early noughties, yet now Apple Music on the iPhone is making them redundant, I still like my iPod, it holds more much more music that doesn't rely on an internet connection and the battery is so much better. Or will there be another alternative new to be developed item - 12 years ago nobody had a tablet, it was your laptop or phone, now tablets (the majority being ipads) are estimated to be in every other house hold in the UK.
